A new satellite election center has opened in South Philadelphia.

On Sept. 20, the City Commissioners office hosted a grand opening at 1835 S. Broad St. near Mifflin Street. The city is creating 10 offices to represent the 10 City Council districts and are designed to bring voting closer to home.

The Broad Street location will represent the city’s 1st District, which encompasses the east side of Broad Street. South Philly’s 2nd District location, which includes the west side of Broad Street, will be announced later.

In addition to the opening of the 1st District, the city has opened locations at 4029 Market St. (3rd District), 5610 Lancaster Ave. (4th District) and 5301 Chew Ave. (8th District).

Pennsylvania does not allow early voting, but it does allow mail-in and absentee ballots with no reason needed. Voters can use the office to update their registration and apply and complete mail-in ballots.

Neighbors, faith leaders, elected officials and representatives from the City Commissioners office celebrated the opening of the 1st District office and its potential to give voters new options to fit casting their ballots into their busy schedules. The 1st District election office is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.
