Last month, student musicians from the Fanny Jackson Coppin School HOME Band visited the Capitol building to perform a concert for lawmakers and advocates in Harrisburg.
They were invited by state Reps. Elizabeth Fiedler and Ben Waxman, whose districts serve Coppin students. They were honored on the House floor and were presented with a certificate of recognition for their contributions to the community.
The HOME Band is made up of students grades 6-8 who have delighted audiences in South Philly with a mix of rock, pop, R&B and more. In Harrisburg, they were joined by Coppin’s music program founder Chris Argerakis. For more than 15 years, Argerakis has taught, conducted and mentored aspiring musicians after school.
The visit by Coppin students coincided with discussions of education funding ahead of budget negotiations as the group showed its support for fully funded public schools.
