Neumann-Goretti High School has a new Director of Athletics.

Following former director Pat Devenney’s departure last month, Neumann-Goretti has filled the role with 1995 graduate Dr. Marc Caserio. Caserio has worked 16 years in athletic management with eight years as an athletic director at the University of Sciences. During his time at the University of Sciences, Caserio also served as an adjunct faculty member for both Drexel University and Neumann University.

“I am honored to return to my alma mater and to serve my community of South Philadelphia,” Caserio told the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. “I am honored to be working with many wonderful coaches and administrators who have developed one of the most successful high school athletic programs in the country.”

Caserio succeeds Devenney, who left Neumann-Goretti as a champion as the Saints’ baseball team won the PIAA Class 3A state championship in June. After serving at Neumann-Goretti for three years, Devenney was named the new Director of Athletics at Philadelphia Catholic League rival Monsignor Bonner & Archbishop Prendergast Catholic High School in July.

At Neumann-Goretti, he oversaw 13 athletic teams, including the addition of girls varsity flag football and resurgence of softball. The Saints also brought back girls and boys soccer, and girls and boys tennis programs at the JV level. Devenney started his new role at Bonner & Prendie on July 15.

“Right from the start of the process, Pat stood out as a leading candidate for the position.” Dr. John E. Cooke, president of Bonner & Prendie, told the Archdiocese of Philadelphia last month. “Since Pat served as a teacher, coach and director of athletics at Neumann-Goretti; he brings with him a wealth of experience, knowledge and skills that will effectively serve the students and coaches at Bonner & Prendie. In addition, he is well respected by his peers in the Philadelphia Catholic League, which will also benefit him and our school as we move our athletic program forward.”

This fall, Caserio will overlook a perennial powerhouse football team, an up-and-coming volleyball team and the return of a varsity boys soccer program. Caserio’s credentials include a Bachelor of Arts from Millersville University, a Master of Education in Sport and Recreation Administration from Temple University and a Doctor of Education in Higher Education Leadership and Innovation from Wilmington University.

“I would like to thank the members of the Archdiocese, our team of administrators and the Board of Directors on hosting a number of qualified candidates for the position of athletic director,” Tim Cairy, president of Ss. Neumann-Goretti High School, told the Archdiocese. “We are all extremely pleased with the addition of Dr. Caserio to the team and look forward to a successful year in the classroom and on the playing fields.”
